An Introduction to the Memory Formula

This blog is an introduction to the ORGANIC INDIA Memory Formula herbal supplement.

ORGANIC INDIA Memory Formula ORGANIC INDIA Memory Formula

There are two herbs in this formula, both of which have the Sanskrit name Brahmi. When an herb supports some really fundamental facet of physiology, or a pervasive facet, then it tends to support us in a way that may appear to be in many ways. Because Brahmi is so fantastic at clearing, opening and toning the venous system and supporting healthy protein bonds, it supports us wherever there is blood flow, which is everywhere! And one of the first places where we are aware of this is in the very nature of our awareness, as Brahmi radically supports and enhances cognitive function. This is why Brahmi is classic food for yogis, monks, priests and scholars in a variety of cultures spanning many millennia.

What is in the Capsule

The two herbs are:

  • Centella/Brahmi/GotuKola (Centella asiatica) with potent antioxidant polyphenols like flavanoids (quercetin, kaempferol, catechin and rutin) and triterpenes/saponins (asiaticosides, asiatic acid, madecassic acid)
  • Bacopa/Brahmi/White Hyssop (Bacopa monniera) with potent antioxidant polyphenols

Name Translation

Brahmi means “Divine” and is also one of the 8 Divine Mothers of all created Beings. The word Brahmi also refers to Saraswati, the Goddess of speech, creativity and sacred knowledge. And indeed Brahmi is renowned to support speech and cognitive function. Here a little etymological ethnopharmacology goes a long way.

Speaking of names and Brahmi, there are two herbs in India that have that name, Centella asiatica and Bacopa monnieri (often misspelled as Bacopa monniera). In this Memory formula we have both Brahmis. They both have very similar actions. By the way, for herbalists who have studied for many years, you may know Centella asiatica by its older synonym, Hydrocotyl asiatica.

OK, so you may be wondering how two herbs get the same name. 5,000 years ago a wise sage describes an herb in the Himalyas, and calls it Brahmi. 500 years later what he wrote is read far away, like in the Bengal, and the readers say, “Hmmmm… this sounds just like this herb,” and so they call that herb Brahmi. 500 years later the same thing happens in Gujarat and 1000 years later the same thing happens in Sri Lanka. This is all fine and good as long the world is not a small place. Now the world is a small place, and we have two wonderful herbs with same name. No worries. We know they are great allies, complimenting each other, and so we take them both and enjoy their synergy in a formula like this one, the ORGANIC INDIA Memory formula.

About the Tagline: Mental Clarity

Both Brahmis, Bacopa and Centella, are known as Medhya Rasayanas, meaning they are amongst the world’s most powerful cognitive function adaptogenic herbs. Clarity is just one of the ways that this formula enhances cognitive function, but that word clarity is a good word to describe Brahmi in general, whether you are addressing clarity of complexion (yes, they are amongst the best skin herbs), or clarity of emotion (clear the liver and you support clearer moods) or about clarity of mind.

Wellness Categories of the Brahmi Supplement

The categories below are based on the fact that Centella and Bacopa are two of the world’s most powerful adaptogenic herbs. They help replenish and nourish the nervous system. They promote increased circulation to the brain and increase energy without stimulating the adrenals. They contain approximately 10% phenols, which are powerful antioxidants supporting anti-aging properties. Western research has confirmed that the Brahmis significantly enhance memory function. They are calming to the nervous system, decreasing anxiety and mental fatigue. And they lift mood and enhance concentration. The ABC’s of Brahmi “Adaptogen-Brain-Circulation.”

Adaptogen

Adaptogens, by definition, must bring physiology into a healthy balance and must do no harm. In thousands of years of use in the Ayurvedic tradition Brahmi has been treasured as an adaptogen, traditionally called a rasayana. In fact a very popular remedy for ensuring optimal cognitive function is Brahmi Rasayana. Now western science is confirming what we have known for millennia, as articles in eminent journals such as BioGerentology describe. As an adaptogen this Memory supplement combines well with the Joy! formula and the Vitality formula.

Antioxidant

Many of the deep actions of Centella and Bacopa, for instance their cognitive function activity, are strongly mediated by antioxidant activity. This antioxidant activity is so strong because these herbs have so many molecules that are very strong antioxidants, and this confluence of factors spells wellness for you, and in the case of the Brahmis, especially cognitive wellness. Antioxidants within Brahmi include: gallic acid, naringin, chlorogenic acid, catechin, rutin, rosmarinic acid, quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol to name a few. Note those last three molecules also are directly anti-xenoestrogenic, which protect us from the molecules placed in our food, air and soil by corporations practicing very non-sustainable methods of operation. Combines well with Tulsi (Holy Basil) and Ashwagandha.

Brain and Cognitive Power

As mentioned above, so many of the antioxidants support cognitive function, and have helped everybody including scholars and spiritual seekers across many traditions and ages. In fact, one of its Himalayan names in the kingdom of Assam is the ManiMuni, literally meaning “the Gem of the Sage.” Brahmi has been revered for thousands of years for its ability to enhance cognitive function, and in fact, its very name refers to this power. Combines well with the Joy! formula for this.

Cardio/Circulation

At all levels of cardiovascular health Brahmi is there to help, from the heart to the very ends of the roads where artery meets vein in the fine realms of microcapillary filtering/reabsorption flows. Often congestion happens at that point of filtering and reabsorption flows, and Bacopa and Centella help to keep these clear and flowing. Of course, these herbs combine well with the Heart Guard formulaAshwagandha and Tulsi (Holy Basil).

Energy

High frequency bitter herbs with an extra affinity for nerve tissue increase energy via catabolic reactions that minimize congestion and optimize flow of physiology. In other words, the energy you tend to feel from Brahmi is your own energy, unleashed from behind blockages caused by stress and from a dietary faux pas or two. To increase enduring healthy energy Brahmi combines well with the Joy! formula, and Ashwagandha.

Cleansing/Detox

High frequency herbs with bitter elements will be natural detoxifiers, and as I said above in the paragraph on energy, some of our favorite actions of Brahmi are derived from this ability to “cleanse” us. Centella and Bacopa are two of the most effective herbs for detoxifying blood and nerve tissue. Combines well with Triphala and Turmeric here.

Long Life Rasayana

Rasayanas are those adaptogenic herbs especially known to be so deeply rejuvenating that they promote long life, mental acuity and youthful vigor and all classic “long-life” herbs are powerful adaptogens. Centella is a highly regarded “long-life” herb in many cultures and traditions. There are many legends of ancient masters who attribute their longevity to Brahmi, including Li Ching Yuen. Combines with the Joy! formula and both the Tulsi (Holy Basil) supplement and Tulsi Tea.

Why is Organic India Brahmi Superior?

Gotu Kola and Bacopa are hydrophytes (living in water) capable of phyto-remediation (able to purify water by drawing molecules from it) and so you must ensure your Gotu Kola and Bacopa grow in pristine water or they could be the most toxic plant in its environment. ORGANIC INDIA’s Brahmi is wild-harvested in remote spring fed forests. We also are working on growing Brahmi in the Himalyas, which I look forward to personally supervising. Some of the Bacopa is also grown on our organic farm.

Energetics

For those interested in the energetics of the Brahmis they are quite cold herbs and so increase Vata dosha, but in a balanced way, as I said, using the catabolic nature of Vata to open channels and decrease congestion; they decreases excessive Pitta yet feed micro-metabolism with high frequency prana; and they decrease congestive Kapha without threatening the stability of Kapha’s structure. Needless to say, they are very Sattvic, and they mainly have the bitter and sweet tastes or rasa as taste is termed in the ancient traditions.

Differentiation

Both the Brahmis work very well on the high frequency facets, including mind, nerves, cognitive power, and both work very well on the lower frequency facets, like muscle, skin, venous tone, etc. For many folks Bacopa will excel at the higher frequency facets and Centella at the lower. But folks, they are close, so close that I hesitate to give you this differentiation lest some silly person says that Centella is not good for the mind and Bacopa….  No! They are great synergistic allies and both work very well at both high and low frequency facets of our wellness.
